Ammonium (methylammonium) transport by Azospirillum spp

چکیده
In recent years soil bacteria of the genus Azospirillum found increasing biological and ecological interest because of their ability to microaerobically fix N 2 and to live in close association with plant roots, stimulating growth of nitrogenlimited plants [1-5]. The physiology of N 2 fixation, especially its repression by N H + , has been studied extensively [6-9]. The question, however, how NH~traverses the membrane of these organisms has not yet been studied. In a number of soil bacteria, N H + uptake is mediated by specific carriers [10]. The results presented here also indicate the existence of a specific NH~carrier in Azospirillum.

Two different carriers transport both ammonium and methylammonium in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.
A new methylammonium-resistant mutant strain from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, henceforth termed 2172 (ma-2), has been isolated. This mutant is affected in a single mendelian gene different from and linked to the ma-1 locus which is defective in the methylammonium-resistant mutant 2170. Both mutations in ma-1 (2170) and ma-2 (2172) are linked to the nit-1 gene coding for the nitrate reductase apo...
متن کاملAmmonium (methylammonium) transport by heterocysts and vegetative cells of Anabaena variabilis.
Transport of the ammonium analogue [(14)C]methylammonium was similar in non-growing, fully differentiated heterocysts as compared to vegetative, multiplying cells of the filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis. NH(4)(+) inhibited uptake into the cells and released accumulated methylammonium from the cells. These observations suggest that the main function of ammonium transport in heteroc...

Methylammonium (as a nonmetabolized analog of ammonium) transport was studied in leaf slices of Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. ;Hawkesbury Wonder.' The relationship of influx to external pH (6.0-10.5) shows that the influx at low external pH is a larger fraction of that at high external pH than would be expected from the pK(alpha) of methylammonium and the assumption that only CH(3)NH(2) is enterin...
متن کاملUptake of methionine sulfoximine by some N2 fixing bacteria, and its effect on ammonium transport.
The N2 fixing bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae, Azospirillum brasilense, Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides and Rhodospirillum rubrum, but not Azotobacter vinelandii accumulate the glutamine analogue methionine sulfoximine in the cell. In the accumulating cells methionine sulfoximine inhibits ammonium transport. Accumulation and inhibition are prevented by glutamine.

Methylammonium is a substrate for the ammonium transport system of Azotobacter vinelandii. During cellular uptake methylammonium is rapidly converted to a less polar metabolite (E. M. Barnes, Jr., and P. Zimniak, J. Bacteriol. 146:512-516, 1981). This metabolite has been isolated from A. vinelandii and identified as gamma-glutamylmethylamide by mass spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance s...
